One popular, if simple, way of looking at glucose homeostasis is to consider it as the result of a balance between the actions of hormones and metabolic processes that increase blood glucose concentrations, and those that decrease it. The most important of the counterbalancing hormones are shown in Fig. 20.6. Although many more factors that can influence blood glucose levels are known, their physiological significance is not clear.
